Abstract

Artikel ini mengkaji pemaknaan penderitaan perspektif Viktor Frankl dan kisah Ayub. Tujuannya memperluas cara pandang akan makna serta respons terhadap penderitaan melalui dua perspektif—teologis dan psikoterapis. Metode penelitian menggunakan analisis deskriptif dan komparatif untuk mengkaji serta mengkomparasikan data. Data penelitian menggunakan sumber primer dan sekunder, baik karya Frankl maupun sumber lainnya yang relevan. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa ada perbedaan antara pandangan Viktor Frankl dan teologi Ayub dalam memaknai serta meresponi penderitaan. Frankl bertolak dari cara pandang  eksistensialisme dengan memandang penderitaan sebagai “demikianlah hidup” serta menekankan respons logotherapy (the will to meaning) untuk secara positif mendorong konseli dalam menghadapi penderitaannya. Orientasi Frankl berfokus pada kekuatan jiwa atau “spiritualitas” makna (psikologi/psikoterapi). Sementara Ayub memaknai penderitaan sebagai bagian dari kehidupan yang merupakan pemberian Allah meskipun buruk (Ayb. 2:10). Ayub meresponi penderitaan dengan prinsip faith-therapy (the will to faith) yang berorientasi pada refleksi iman kepada kehendak dan rencana Allah (teologis). Meski berbeda, kedua perspektif ini bersifat komplementer dan dapat diterapkan sebagai refleksi pastoral bercirikan teologi-psikoterapis dalam usaha memaknai dan meresponi penderitaan.
