A Proposal for Further Research in the Context of Indonesian Christian Schools

Teacher dependence on textbooks without understanding the underlying philosophy of the authors becomes the background of this study. The purpose of this research is to describe the perceptions of Science teachers at SMP SLH Curug, Tangerang, in using Science textbooks to achieve the school's vision and mission. Specifically, this study explores teachers’ perceptions, underlying rationale, strategies, challenges, and reflections in using textbooks to support the school's vision and mission. A qualitative phenomenological method was employed, using in-depth interviews with four Science teachers. The results of the study reveal five main themes: compliance with Indonesian government standards, Biblical Christian Worldview Contextual Themes, enduring understanding, explanation through examples, and reflection. The results show that Science teachers perceive textbooks as teaching aids which should be aligned with the school’s vision and mission. Five underlying rationales were identified in how teachers use the textbooks, along with four main challenges in integrating textbooks with a Biblical Christian Worldview. Teacher reflections emphasized awareness, responsibility, and pedagogical creativity in textbook use. It is concluded that the Science teachers at SMP SLH Curug applied Christian educational philosophy in their use of Science textbooks. It is recommended to establish a Professional Learning Community (PLC) to assist teachers in using textbooks based on a Biblical Christian Worldview and for further research to be conducted on developing a model for textbook integration in Christian education.
